Mentorship, whether informal or formal, is a critical aspect of teaching in learning in higher education. The quality of mentorship experiences can have a direct impact on student outcomes. Despite how pervasive mentorship is within in the academy, mentors lack formal training in effective mentorship practices, often adopting the practices and qualities of their own mentors. Negative mentorship experiences can have lasting implications for learning, well-being, and the desire to remain in a particular field, particularly for BIPOC students and other marginalized groups.

This workshop will serve as a starting point for graduate student mentors to formalize their mentorship skill development in using a collaborative approaches to supporting the goals and development of both mentors and mentees. This workshop will introduce graduate students to models of teaching and learning in mentorship, and provide strategies to foster inclusive, collaborative and anti-oppressive mentorship relationships with the undergraduate students that they work with.
