Cultivating Sustainability in the Classroom: Pedagogies for Change (Online)
March 27 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT
This workshop invites course instructors, teaching assistants, and graduate students to explore sustainability and its relevance to teaching and learning. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of sustainability’s three pillars—environmental, social, and economic—and how these principles can be incorporated into sustainability pedagogy across disciplines.
Building on the university’s commitment to sustainability, as highlighted by the President’s Advisory Committee on the Environment, Climate Change, and Sustainability (CECCS), this session will guide participants through a reflective process to evaluate their own teaching values and their alignment with sustainability goals. Participants will learn how to apply these values to create transformative learning experiences that inspire critical thinking, resilience, and action among students.
The workshop will also address the impacts of sustainability issues on student learning, including challenges like climate anxiety. Participants will collaboratively generate strategies and pedagogical approaches to mitigate these effects, instill hope, and empower students to engage meaningfully with sustainability in their education and beyond.
